WALLY Lawson won his third club race of the season when his young pigeon scorched home from Wollaston last Sunday beating 192 birds entered by thirteen members of Luddenden Foot Homing Society.
The liberation was delayed until Sunday at 9.15 am because of the forecasted heavy and continuous rain on Saturday and in a blustery West South West wind, interspersed with showers, the winner covered the 85 miles to Ripponden in just under one hour
and seventeen minutes for an average speed of 66 mph.
The bird had shown promise the week before when seventh from Stafford and a confident Wally won all the pools, nomination and pontoon prizes giving him a total return of £52. Terry Divers, ably assisted during his recovery from a series of operations by father Pete, was second in front of Mr and Mrs Hiam's hen in third.
Two minutes later Midgley's Geoff Ingham timed his pigeon to take fourth place and the final prize card. Derek Brearley won the latest knock out competition with his tenth placed bird. This Saturday's race is from Worcester.
