Junior skipper leads the way for Skip

HEBDEN Bridge's junior captain, George Bamford's recent fine form continued after being the best placed finisher from the Halifax and Huddersfield Area in the Yorkshire Boys under-16s Championship at York Golf Club with rounds of 77 and 75 for a total of 152 gaining him a share of 14th place.
Tom Calvert (Willow Valley) was the nearest local lad to him with a combined total of 154.
Not satisfied with this he then went on to win the captain's prize at his own club last Saturday with a score of 44 points, closely followed by another 16-year-old Jack Earle on 43 points, making club captain and junior organiser Geoff Holmes immensely proud of their achievements beating a strong field of a hundred including club champion Iain Powell who plays off scratch, once again cementing the view that the youngsters at the club are going from strength to strength.
George a member of the Union under-18 team will now be playing off a handicap of 3.6 and Jack (new handicap of 13) who until recently a rabbit, will at this rate soon be in single figures.
l Club Captain Geoff Holmes also organised a nine-hole ladies competition won by Michaela Smith (pictured left) with Jan Cox in second place.
Michaela who only joined the club last year is fast becoming a popular member at Mount Skip having now won several competitions prior to this event.
In order to encourage juniors taking up the sport, Geoff who is also the junior organiser, also put on a beginners competition over nine holes on the Sunday for those with handicaps of more than 28, this was well attended and all those taking part received prizes.
In first place was Harry Wade, second was Henri Butterworth and third – and best placed girl – was Neeve Fisher.
The Hebden Bridge Junior Open will be held on Sunday September 7, additionally there will be a competition later in the afternoon over nine holes for those juniors with handicaps of more than 28.

Nearest the pin in two shots on the 2nd/11th Nigel Fielden (9ft 10ins) and longest drive on 3rd/12th George Bamford.
