JONATHAN Sutcliffe playing of an handicap of four is in the best form of his life scoring an excellent gross 63 at a hot and sunny Mount Skip last Saturday, this score being only two shots from equalling the club record of 61.
Sutcliffe has put himself in a strong position to become Golfer of the Year and to also win the Erringden Trophy, and a worthy challenger to Iain Powell the holder of both these prestigious Board Competitions, the latter of whom will no doubt still h
ave something to say on the matter before the end of the season.
Jonathan followed this up the following day by winning the Captain's Mixed, played in a Texas Scramble format with a score of 54, some seven shots clear of the second place team, he was ably assisted on this occasion by his playing partners Barbara Leeming and Chas Woodhead.
Once again the golf was played in brilliant sunshine with only a slight breeze to keep those playing cool. Following the competition all competitors, partners and friends enjoyed a magnificent feast put on by 'Sooty's' mum Lorraine.
Unfortunately the same could not be said for Neil Clegg (handicap 10) last Saturday.
He was only two over gross when standing on the 18th tee but decided to have a slight altercation with the gorse, scoring thirteen on that hole and finishing fifteen over par for the round.
As always, the golfing guru 'Blackers' had to go one better scoring 14 on the 4th, but nevertheless was in good spirits in the club house when telling others how to improve their swing!
- The annual club trip last Friday was another success with some 48 members playing at Bradford (Hawksworth) Golf Club, the main 4BBB competition being won by Andy 'Big Bash' Cryer and Ray Priestley with 42 points narrowly beating Iain Powell and Dave Pickles.
The weather was again brilliant and held out until late evening when a thunderstorm enlightened the return journey back home over the moors
Unfortunately the juniors could only halve their match 4-4 with Halifax (Ogden) Golf Club last Friday thereby narrowly missing out on a top four play off place, despite this disappointment the future augurs well for the junior section at the club which continues to grow in numbers.
George Bamford playing off a handicap of four, who was unfortunately missing for the match with Halifax due to playing in the Yorkshire Under 16 years Boys Amateur Championship at York , finished a creditable 14th out of a field of 70 plus, scoring a gross 152 with rounds of 77 and 75 (12 over par).
- This Saturday is Geoff Holmes' Captain's Day at Skip, this is traditionally one of the busiest golfing days in the clubs calendar, with more than 100 competitors taking part. Geoff would welcome any new members to contact him at the club (01422 842896) should they wish to join - the skipper says it is when attractive mid-season rates can be offered.
