MAJOR cities and towns all have their own major running events and now Mytholmroyd has an event of its very own too.
The third annual Alice's run, a multi-terrain 10k race in aid of Epilepsy Action, will take place on Sunday, August 31. The event is in memory of local girl Alice Redmond from Blackshaw Head, who died following a tragic accident in August 2005.

Alice worked at Epilepsy Action during a year-long placement from her Events Management course at Leeds Metropolitan University, working hard for the charity which will benefit from the race.

The race will start at 10.30 am at Brearley field in Mytholmroyd and finish at Calder High School which Alice attended before going to university.

It is expected to attract a good number of serious runners as well as those who just want to enjoy a nice walk in the lovely surroundings of the Calder Valley. There will also be a junior trail race and a children's fun run as well as entertainment and refreshments.

David Scott, former Calder High head teacher will present the prizes, as he did for the previous two years.

Philippa Corner, Epilepsy Action's events manager and friend of Alice, said: "For the past two years, Alice's Run has proved very popular. Last year's run attracted 250 entrants and raised more than 6,000.

"Alice was an asset to the Epilepsy Action team and we are determined to make this year's race just as successful as a fitting tribute to her memory."

Alice's mother, Liv Redmond of Blackshaw Head, said:"Alice enjoyed a very happy, constructive time at Epilepsy Action and at the end of her year there she emerged as a much more confident person. We are really grateful to them for that.

"We are also very pleased that the run continues to be a popular and successful event and to support it in any way we can.

"Alice was a very enthusiastic person who enjoyed life to the full and the run continues to be a fitting tribute to her memory. We hope it will be even more successful than last year."

Entry forms for Alice's Run are available from Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Centre, online at www.epilepsy.org.uk/involved/alicesrun, at the event on the day or call 0113 210 8800.

Race categories include men, women and veteran classes.

A T-shirt and goody bag will be given to all 10k finishers, while junior and fun run finishers will receive medals.

The money raised will help Epilepsy Action. Last year alone the organisation directly helped over 731,000 people through a range of services, including its Epilepsy Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050, advice and information centre, branch network and website, www.epilepsy.orq.uk
